What is pain?

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. As occupational therapists, we commonly deal with the pain associated with musculoskeletal injuries, surgery, neurological disorders, or other medical conditions.

Pain is often divided into two main categories, acute and chronic.

Acute pain: This type of pain begins suddenly and is typically sharp in quality. Acute pain might be caused by many events or circumstances, including:

  • Surgical pain
  • Traumatic pain (i.e., broken bone and/or sprain/strains)

Chronic Pain: This type of pain lasts beyond the expected recovery period and/or occurs with a chronic health condition (i.e., fibromyalgia, stroke, arthritis, etc.).

One of the classic signs of chronic pain is the period of improvement becoming shorter, whereas the periods of severe pain become longer. Although people often feel constant pain, most experience hills, and valleys.

If your pain interferes with your usual activities, it is essential to have an occupational therapist assess your situation sooner than later. Fortunately, our team can help you get to the root of your problems and find long-term relief for any pain you are experiencing!

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy focuses on helping you regain or improve normal activities like dressing, bathing, and other household tasks. For some, it is helping them return to their job with modifications and/or adaptations. Occupational therapy is often part of a rehabilitation team consisting of physical and speech therapy.

Occupational therapists also help with physical, psychological, and cognitive processing to help ensure you can do what matters most in your everyday life. Occupational therapy aims to improve your ability to perform specific movements and activities during daily activities.

People of all ages can benefit from occupational therapy, ranging from children with disabilities in school to adults or older people needing help improving their physical function and cognitive health. We are dedicated to helping your recovery from physical, mental, and cognitive processing injuries, illnesses, or disabilities.

Our Hand in Hand Rehabilitation occupational therapists focus on your normal day-to-day functioning by providing exercises and activities to enhance your physical and mental health.

What to expect at your Hand in Hand Rehabilitation occupational therapy sessions

At Hand in Hand Rehabilitation, our occupational therapist will start with an individual assessment to determine the source of your pain, range of motion, strength, abilities, and personal goals. This information will help us design a customized program to improve your function so you can resume your normal daily tasks.

Occupational therapy can help you deal with physical, mental, and cognitive processing disorders. We will design our programs to regain mobility, improve joint range of motion, and regain independence in their daily routine.

Our therapists can help you manage or alleviate acute or chronic pain and create customized splints to prevent or correct injuries. In other cases, it’s relearning how to plan and process actions.

All our interventions are one-on-one and based on restoring your daily tasks and activities by helping you regain your normal skills and working with you to restore the other elements of your well-being.
